ASHTON JEANTY
Boise State - Junior - 5’09, 215lbs
Pros
Outstanding contact balance. Keeps his feet under him and bounces off of hits without losing stance
Plus vision paired with great feel means Jeanty knows how to move to space as he runs on instinct
Pinballs through traffic, bouncing and rolling off of bodies
Minimizes exposure when facing incoming defenders so that they can’t square him up.
Attacks shoulders of defenders when contact is imminent, ensuring he can grind through them for more yards
Patient and methodical pacing through the first level
Hides in traffic and bounces out unexpectedly with surprisingly big lateral cuts
Long speed is adequate enough, and when he sees open space in front he gets to top speed easily
Legs are incredibly strong
Cons
Lacks true shock in his first few steps, and could find himself fighting initial contact much earlier in the NFL
Won’t step through as many tackles by d-lineman and linebackers
Urgency might need adjusting when he gets to the accelerated pace of NFL
Could struggle to pull the back end defenders in to bad angles and minimize longer gains
Summary
Jeanty will be the consensus to be the first Running Back drafted and it’s obvious why. He’s producing at a historic pace in college and has a lot of the traits that have made previous bowling balls - like Maurice Jones-Drew and Frank Gore - successful. He looks to be a workhorse back for a team that wants a physical grinder between the tackles in power styled systems.
