DREW ALLAR - QB
Penn State - Junior - 6’5, 238lbs
Pros
Tight End build and athleticism. Has similar movement skills to an in-line TE, with good speed and controlled footwork
Light enough on his feet to move and shuffle easily around the pocket
Fast enough for chunk gains when scrambling, is a good runner with a big stride when going
Arm talent is top of the class and would be a premier arm in the NFL
Effortless thrower who can place the ball on deep outs easily
Understands touch and velocity. Allar can take steam off of passes to perfect timing, or can arc passes over defenders in to intermediate zones
Knows to lead receivers into passes by throwing with anticipation, letting receivers run through the ball
Cons
Still relatively green when it comes to reps in college. He has 1/3rd the pass attempts of Cam Ward
Inexperience shows, as he can sometimes lose rhythm and placement
Penn State’s offense isn’t setup to have him throwing a lot, nor do they have supremely talented receivers across the field. Allar is not used to shouldering the offense when needed.
Could use more urgency and snap in his game, using some aggression in approach
Summary
In baseball Allar would be considered a five-tool player. It’s rare to have a Quarterback who possesses every tool you require for the position and is truly gifted in the most important one - arm talent. Allar can easily generate velocity and distance on his passes with a quick and effortless motion, comparing favorably to Justin Herbert. In an offense where Allar can work with play-action and talented receivers, he’ll be driving the ball to intermediate zones with ease and ripping apart defenses. The sky is the limit for Allar but he’s still green enough and inconsistent enough that there is lots of risk here too. He’s just getting acclimated to high-end football and the step up gets even bigger in the NFL. But I believe in the tools and what he’s shown so far. I’ll spend the rest of the run up to the draft debating with myself over him being the QB1 of the class, because there’s good reason to put him there.
